About the destination

Elvas is a Portuguese city located in the district of Portalegre in the Alentejo region. Elvas is located on a hill just 8 km from the Guadiana River which is de facto border between Portugal and Spain. Its late Gothic cathedral which also shows Moorish influences, dates from the reign of Manuel I (1495-1521). The city has an aqueduct built between the years 1498 and 1622 that supplied water and having a height of 40 m. The abolition of border controls with Portugal, the Schengen Agreement over the aqueduct has given new impetus to this border city. Elvas is currently a city in constant development. Due to the short distance of the city of Badajoz, the Badajoz elvenses and often live as if they were a single city, where the Portuguese usually go shopping in Spain and the second visit the city and enjoy its gastronomy. Elvas is a city where music shows are very present, have concerts from the Coliseo Jose Rondão Almeida, as well as in the Parque da Piedade, or the Republic Square in the Sports Pavilion, or the Park Aqueduct Amoreiras. The strengths of music are the Youth Week, the Iberian Seafood Festival, the great Feria de San Mateus (most of southern Portugal), the May Fair, as well as almost every month there are concerts at the Coliseum . Every two years, Elvas receives the "Freedom Festival Portugal", a festival of trance music that is the largest in Europe.
